ISLAND A WEEK: Aegean Collection - RODOS

My AEGEAN COLLECTION features rings and pendants that have been inspired by the light and color of my beloved Greek Islands. These pieces are mixed media jewelry, where each piece has a ceramic shard as its focal. For each ring or pendant, I have completed the ceramic shard in a different way, using different materials and techniques such as metal (aluminium or copper) sheet, copper wire, polymer clay and acrylic paints.
Each piece of my Aegean Collection is named after a different island, so I thought I'd introduce them one by one! Welcome to the wonderful world of the Greek Islands of the Aegean!!!

RHODES (Greek Ρόδος, Ródos) is the largest of the Dodecanese islands in terms of both land area and population. It is located approximately 18 kilometres (11 mi) southwest of Turkey in the eastern Aegean Sea. In the ancient times, it was famous for its Colossus, the giant statue of god Helios (the Sun) that used to stand above the port. The Colossus is now considered as one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Today, Rhodes is among the most popular Greek islands, famous for its beautiful beaches, the green and varied landscapes, the traditional villages and the Old Town of Rhodes, one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe. The medieval Old Town of the City of Rhodes has been declared a World Heritage Site. The incredible mix of ancient and modern, East and West, modern mass tourism and unspoiled genuine landscapes and villages, crowded beaches and completely deserted coasts, make it a unique destination.

NEW SUNNY PENDANT!

Ok, I'm indulging and spoiling myself a little bit ;)... I created a new pendant because I wanted an orange sun pendant to wear myself, and here it is! One good thing about designing jewelry is that when we are looking for something in particular, that we cannot find, we just go on and create it ;)!
I used an orange glass bead and I wire-wrapped it with copper wire, creating the rays! So here's my new personal treasure... And... by the way, I wasn't so selfish, I had two of these glass beads so I made a second sun which I gave my cousin/best friend Sylvia :)!

CREATIVE CORNER

I'm working on the other pieces of beach pottery... I picked two pieces that have a smooth white glazed surface and I applied blue sand to them. Yes, sand! I used a special hardener, specifically designed to bind deco sand and sand in general into a firm mass. Usually this technique is used for pressing the mass into molds after mixing the sand with the hardener, but I decided to experiment and I applied the mass directly on the beach pottery pieces. After hardening the result is really nice and the blue sand is a firm and sturdy mass, I love the result!

NEW MEDITERRANEAN BEACH POTTERY RINGS!

Do you remember the beautiful beach pottery I collected on the Riviera? Here are the two new rings I created! I highlighted the glaze surface with acrylic paint: lavender blue for Mediterraneo 3 and turquoise for Mediterraneo 4.

SPRING MAGIC IN THE WOODS

The woods are covered with sweet little flowers... They are tiny yet so beautiful... and the colors -- aaah the colors!!! From citrine yellow to violet and all shades of blue... and pink and white... Mostly it's primroses, that create amazing colorful "cushions" of myriads of flowers: you see these colorful spots everywhere! Then there are violets -in both violet and the more rare white- and other wonderful tiny flowers. The primroses have the longest blooming time, during which other species alternate their bloom: the latest addition has been the white anemones, I saw them this week for the first time. This post is for you, Yael, and for all of you my dear friends who loved my spring flower pictures :)!
Which spring flowers are in bloom now where you live?
