ISLAND A WEEK: Aegean Collection - NISYROS

My AEGEAN COLLECTION features rings and pendants that have been inspired by the light and color of my beloved Greek Islands. These pieces are mixed media jewelry, where each piece has a ceramic shard as its focal. For each ring or pendant, I have completed the ceramic shard in a different way, using different materials and techniques such as metal (aluminium or copper) sheet, copper wire, polymer clay and acrylic paints.
Each piece of my Aegean Collection is named after a different island, so I thought I'd introduce them one by one! Welcome to the wonderful world of the Greek Islands of the Aegean!!!
Here is a beautiful and complete website about the Greek Islands:
http://www.greek-islands.us/

NISYROS (or Nissyros; Greek Νίσυρος) is a small volcanic Greek island and municipality located in the Aegean Sea. It is part of the Dodecanese group of islands, situated between the islands of Kos and Tilos. Its shape is approximately round, with a diameter of only about 8 km. Nisyros is an unspoiled haven of peace and tranquility, it possesses the clear water beauty of the Aegean sea coupled with a small village atmosphere. The island boasts various volcanic craters, the most important and biggest of them monopolising the tourists' interest as it is one of the biggest and best preserved hydrothermal volcanoes in the world.

NEW YEAR WITH MY FRIENDS!

I joined Etsy on January 1st, 2010. That same day I opened my shop. Boy was I excited! My work would be seen from allover the world! What I didn't realize back then was that I wasn't just opening an e-shop -- I was joining the most wonderful, amazing artist community. It's been a wonderful year that has changed my life and perception of art. I've met lots of wonderful persons, incredibly talented artists and some really wonderful friends. We have given each other "hearts", we've supported each other, we've shared ideas, we've given each other precious advice, we've grown together... and most important of all, we've given each other the gift of Friendship.

And EACH item represents something about my world and my plans and hopes for 2011! I really hope this Treasury will NEVER make it to Front Page, as there are NO "alternates" here! :)
HAPPY NEW YEAR and see you in 2011!!!
(with some of you this might literally come true)

LIPSI (Greek Λειψοί) is one of the smaller islands at the northern end of the Dodecanese chain that runs up the coast of Turkey. It is located south of Samos and to the north of Leros. Lipsi still has the charm and atmosphere you expect from a tiny Greek island. Peace and quiet are the island's main characteristics... an island for those seeking a quite retreat, where life revolves around a few beaches, tavernas and cafes.

CHRISTMAS IN GREECE: MY FIRST EGST CHALLENGE!

I have taken part in my first Etsy Greek Street Team (EGST) Challenge, which happens to be my very first challenge! The official theme - given the festive time - was the pomegranate, since this is a typical Greek and Mediterranean winter fruit. Widely present in ancient Greek mythology, in modern times the pomegranate still holds strong symbolic meanings in Greece, and the fruits are a common decoration for the home in these festive days in Greece.
Red and Christmas-related creations could be entered too, and this was my entry for the challenge. I just discovered that my felt ring bears an astonishing resemblance to the pomegranate blossom!

These are the beautiful entries by my EGSTeam mates!

KARPATHOS (Greek Κάρπαθος) is the second largest of the Greek Dodecanese islands, in the southeastern Aegean Sea. From its remote position Karpathos has preserved many peculiarities of dress, customs and dialect. Only the southern part of the Greek Island has been open to the slowly increasing tourism, whereas the northern part is totally unspoiled and very authentic, with various traditional and picturesque villages. Apart from its lovely villages, the island has many beautiful beaches, a wonderful sea and very friendly inhabitants.

Private Treasures: FELT FLOWER BROOCH

I made this brooch a few years ago, using felt scraps in orange and red and adding a polymer clay bead as the center of the flower. I'm wearing it quite often these days, because it's so colorful and brightens up any outfit.

PATMOS (Greek Πάτμος) is a small Greek island in the Aegean Sea. One of the northernmost islands of the Dodecanese complex, it has a population of approximately 3000. Patmos is a charming, picturesque and peaceful island still far from the flow of mass tourism. In 1999, the island's historic center Chora, along with the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian and the Cave of the Apocalypse, were declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
